The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) unveiled recent renovations at the SMILEplus dental clinic, located in Machray School, on Wednesday morning. This clinic, the only publicly funded dental clinic in Winnipeg, offers a $30 flat rate for services exclusively to children.

CHVN Radio reported that the renovations to the Saving Mouths in Income Limited Environments (SMILEplus) clinic cost approximately $180,000. The upgrades include brighter colours, improved layout, enhanced privacy, and new X-ray machines and TVs.

The SMILEplus program has operated in Winnipeg for over 30 years, serving an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 children annually. “The SMILEplus program is vital to ensuring children in lower-income brackets can receive the dental care they need,” says Linda Pharand, senior dental hygienist for the SMILEplus program.

The WRHA’s SMILEplus team, consisting of dentists, dental hygienists, and assistants, collaborates with senior dentistry students from the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry and School of Dental Hygiene to deliver services. Find out more about the program.
