Kids with excess Halloween candy can participate in the SmileGrove Dental cash-for-candy exchange in Oakville, located in the Greater Toronto Area, from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8, Inside Halton reported.
“It’s an opportunity for children to bring their excess candy to our dental office,” said Dr. Karen Man, a dentist at SmileGrove.
For some experts, this time of year is an educational opportunity for kids.
“It is important to approach this holiday with balance in mind. Kids can have candy, but let’s also pair it with a healthy snack,” said Camila Martin, a clinical pediatric nutritionist at UW Health Kids.
“Kids should have a well-balanced meal before going trick-or-treating to help prevent over-consuming candy on an empty stomach.”
In the United States, QR Code Generator, a company that provides QR codes for product identification, listed the most sugary Halloween candies. They found Pixy Stix topped the 100-candy list. According to their analysis, a 100-gram package of Pixy Stix contains 95 grams of sugar.
Luckily, Pixy Stix aren’t among Canadians’ top Halloween candies.
On Oct. 25, the Globe and Mail reported that after a hard-fought battle and more than 1,200 votes, Kit Kat took the crown as Canada’s top Halloween treat.
So far, more than a quarter of Canadians plan to spend over $100 on Halloween this year, with average spending around $68, rising to $122 for parents, a new Leger poll suggests. However, about 27 per cent of survey participants said they will not spend anything this Halloween.
