University of Florida has launched a cutting-edge AI-powered simulation program, combining avatars and virtual reality, to train future dentists and nurse practitioners, Main Street Daily News reported.
Dr. Michael Bumbach, clinical assistant professor at UF’s College of Nursing, spearheaded the initiative after recalling the challenges of entering the professional world without adequate practice in specialist consultations.
“Starting out as a nurse practitioner in the ER was nerve-wracking,” Bumbach said. “This simulation aims to boost student confidence, ensuring smoother communication and better patient outcomes.”
Developed in partnership with the College of Dentistry, UF’s Office of Interprofessional Education, and the Department of Computer and Information Science, the program mimics real-world health care scenarios. Using AI avatars, students tackle cases such as a patient arriving in the ER with a missing tooth. The avatars respond in real time, evaluating empathy, diagnostic thoroughness, and communication skills.
Dental and nursing students also collaborate through virtual consultations, devising care plans and refining techniques with AI feedback. And then faculty members monitor and assess their progress, ensuring skill development.
