A Dance with Rumination | The Art of Autism

Date:

By Carrie Farrar

My mind is moving rapidly
My thoughts, a reverie
Of frantic worries entertained
Despite the calm I see.
___________________________
My pencil hits the paper
In a quest to understand
The ruminations haunting me
Obsessions that command.
___________________________
Unwavering attention
To their message loud and clear
Abandon logic to the lies
That whisper in my ear.
____________________________
So I take a breath and pause
Look around until I see
There is nothing going on
That I can’t handle being me.

Carrie Farrar is a teacher and writer originally from Orange County, California. She has a bachelor’s degree in child development from California State University, Long Beach. After starting out as a preschool teacher, she stopped working for about two years following her Autism diagnosis. Writing poetry has helped her work through bouts of rumination and doubt. She has written prolifically since she was a young child and is currently working on her first book of poetry. In 2024, Carrie joined the poetry group Lyrical Flames, where she reads her poetry all over Los Angeles. Since she is a new poet, she has yet to be published. She currently resides in Woodland Hills, and teaches music at St. John’s Preschool in El Segundo, California.
