Connection is key when it comes to managing ADHD. Wherever you are in your ADHD journey, the need for connection in your life is indispensable. We know this, but connection is not always the easiest thing to find. So, let’s take some time to explore different areas of connection and how we can seek more of it.

Family

Families are the initial source of connection most of us have. We are born (or adopted) into a family. They are our first teachers and first friends. Yes, some of us have a difficult relationship with family, but if it is a source of positive connection, we must not let it wane. If your given family is not a source of healthy connection, perhaps it is time to choose a family through friendships.

Friendships

The big area of connection that we need is friendship. Having those in our lives with whom we choose to associate will go a long way to making us feel connected to the larger world. However, friendship can be hard when you have ADHD. Making friends (especially as an adult) and maintaining friendships is no easy task. 

Networking

Similar to friendships, networking in your field is a source of positive connection. Lately, I have been collaborating with some awesome people for a work project. Being able to chat with these fun people brings me life. Granted, I’m doing it over Zoom and not in person, so it is not as effective as it could be. However, I know it is having a positive impact on me. Moreover, I have also signed up for the ADHD Coaches Retreat in September. If you are an ADHD coach, I recommend you check it out because our profession can get lonely.

Spirituality

Even when you are all alone, there is a way to find connection because you are never truly alone. There is a higher power out there with whom to connect. It can be hard when there are so many religions or spiritual paths to follow. I encourage you to find the truth of the spiritual world and embrace wherever that takes you. I believe if you are honestly following the truth and not listening to the thousands of voices telling you what to believe, you will find the truth. And the truth will set you free. 

Causes

Furthermore, when you know what you believe, you can get involved in causes. In doing so, you find connection with like-minded people, and you feel like a part of something bigger than yourself. So, if you believe in something, do not just sit there and believe it. Do something about it. Get involved. 

Get into Action!

When you read all of the above things, it is easy to say, “Yes, I’m going to get involved and connect with all the areas of connection I can.” However, it is easier to do nothing. We stuck in the routine of doing the same thing all the time. We need to break out of that cycle, so I encourage you to get into action. I know I need to do this more, and I’m betting you do too. Action is the most difficult, but most crucial, part of living life with ADHD. It is hard to get into action, but it is so necessary. So, what can you do to ensure you get into action? Do you need an accountability partner? Do you need a visual cue to do so? Do you need to set a reminder on your phone? Do you just need to act now before you forget? Whatever you need, I suggest setting that up immediately. If you think, “I’ll do that later,” you will never do it because later never gets here. So, I encourage you to go out and get connection now.
