For the first time since launching the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), Government of Canada released participation data for both patients and healthcare providers in each province.
Since December 2023, the CDCP has been rolled out, beginning with seniors aged 70 and older. On May 1, 2024, care began for seniors over 65, and applications opened for this group. On June 27, 2024, applications were also opened to adults with a Disability Tax Credit certificate and children under 18. Applications for those aged 18 to 64 years will start in 2025.
So far, the total percentage of participation across all provinces and territories is nearly 22%. Ontario leads with the highest patient participation rate at 27.36%. However, it’s important to note that this high percentage may partly reflect Ontario’s larger population. When comparing participation rates relative to population size, the figures might differ.
Regarding oral health providers, the total number participating in the CDCP is 19,159. Once again, Ontario stands out with the highest number of participating providers at 43.36%. Prince Edward Island has the lowest percentage of providers at 0.22%.
Statistics for the CDCP is valid as of Aug. 16, and will be updated on a monthly basis, the government says.
